Central Otago is notorious for producing exceptional grapes with the most scenic of landscapes, but what some people don’t know is the hidden gem they have up their sleeve – Cargo Cellar Door. Originally introduced in 2017 as a unique tasting room, Malcom and Meron had plans to be the best beer garden in New Zealand. Their belief that beer always tastes better in a beer garden was all they needed to bring Cargo to life!

Built on the concept that people are unique and so should be their product offering, Cargo Brewery wanted to fill that much needed gap in the Gibbston Valley region – a craft beer establishment amongst the vines. The aim of inspiring and brewing excitement (excuse the pun) was exactly what Cargo did – they created a new, innovative environment nestled in the Gibbston Valley region.

Cargo Cellar Door ensures you can bounce between vines and hops with Cargos – ensuring something for everyone. Offering 4 exceptional wine partners, Bald HillsDomaine RewaProphets Rock and Quartz Reef, there really is something to satisfy everyone’s tastebuds!

From the minute you arrive at Cargo, you feel a sense of belonging, the naturally welcoming and family orientated environment encourages guests to sit back and enjoy the scenery, company and of course beverages! Creating that relaxed and easy going environment was the priority for the team at Cargo when building their unique space, ensuring that all guests, whether on a tour, just out for an afternoon platter or catching up with the family felt as though they could actually unwind and enjoy the company.

Speaking with Oli from Cargo Brewery, his family background in hospitality drove his passion for wine, exceptional service and creating an environment for the whole family including Cargo’s most passionate team member – Cassie the dog!

With this in mind, the team have curated a simple yet effective menu sure to suit all tastebuds. This Summer Season, the team recommends the Summer Lovers paddle, this way you get a taste of all four vineyard drops offered at Cargo, or you could splash out and get a flight of craft beer! Both boards are perfectly paired with the Ploughmans Board, Whitestone cheese, crackers, fruit and sourdough – need we say more!

Good people and great wine – what more can you want on a hot summers afternoon in central Otago? Whether it’s a tasting flight board of craft beer, a glass of Prophet Rock Pinot Gris or a pizza and platter on the lawn, Cargo Brewery has something for everyone.

The team at Cargo and Altitude Tours believe the best events start with great company, so book your Wine Sampler or Craft Beer experience with Altitude Tours and enjoy the welcome experience that is Cargo Brewery.
