Your day begins with an early pick up from or near your Queenstown accommodation. Settle into a premium Mercedes Sprinter, meet your guide, and leave town behind as the landscape gradually opens out. With a small group on board, the day starts in a comfortable and relaxed way.

Te Anau is the last town before Fiordland takes over. It is a chance to pause by the lakeside, stretch your legs, and grab a morning coffee before the scenery becomes more dramatic. From here, the road to Milford begins to feel even more special.

From Te Anau, the journey continues into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Fiordland National Park. The landscape becomes larger, wilder, and more dramatic, with granite peaks, glacier-fed rivers, native forest, and countless photo stops along the way. It is a part of the drive that feels distinctly New Zealand, and unlike anywhere else.

The road then opens into the broad expanse of Eglinton Valley. With wide flats, native beech forest, and mountain walls rising on either side, this stretch of the journey has a real sense of scale and calm. It is one of the many reasons the drive to Milford is just as memorable as the destination itself.

A short stop at Mirror Lakes offers one of Fiordland’s most recognisable views. On a calm day, the still water reflects the surrounding mountains with remarkable clarity, creating one of those simple moments that leaves a lasting impression.

As you approach the Homer Tunnel, the landscape begins to shift again. Rock closes in around the road, and on the other side the final approach to Milford feels close and dramatic. In wet weather, waterfalls spill down the cliffs, while on clear days the alpine scenery feels sharp and immense.

Upon arrival in Milford Sound, board your small boat nature cruise and head out into the fiord. With a knowledgeable nature guide on board, you will explore beneath towering peaks, past waterfalls, and along the edges of the fiord where wildlife is often seen. Depending on the day, that may include dolphins, fur seals, penguins, and native birdlife. This is also the perfect time to relax and enjoy your complimentary packed picnic lunch while taking in the scenery around you.

After your cruise, the journey back to Queenstown takes a completely different turn. Meet your helicopter pilot and lift off from Milford Sound for an unforgettable flight across the Southern Alps. From above, Fiordland reveals an entirely new scale, with alpine valleys, rugged peaks, glaciers, hidden lakes, and vast stretches of wilderness unfolding beneath you.

Weather permitting, your flight includes a remote alpine landing, giving you the chance to step out into the mountains and take in the surroundings from somewhere few people ever get to stand. It is a quiet, spectacular contrast to the journey by road and water earlier in the day.

From the alpine landing, continue your scenic flight back towards Queenstown. Touch down after experiencing Milford Sound by road, water, and air, turning what is already an incredible day into one of the most complete ways to experience Fiordland.

Your full-day adventure from Queenstown lasts around 10 hours, giving us plenty of time to make scenic stops along the way. You’ll enjoy an approximate 2-hour cruise through the majestic Milford Sound, followed by a stunning helicopter flight back that offers a spectacular bird’s-eye view of this incredible landscape.

If weather conditions prevent your flyback to Queenstown, there’s no need to worry. You’ll travel back with us in our comfortable van, where we’ll play a movie for you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenic journey home—no boarding pass needed!

Our premium vehicles seat 16, but we cap bookings at 15 to provide a more intimate and comfortable travel experience. From the moment you board, it’s all about enjoying the journey in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Once at Milford Sound, you’ll embark on a small boat nature cruise that accommodates 60 to 75 passengers, depending on the weather. It’s the perfect balance: a cozy group on the road, and spacious comfort while soaking in the stunning scenery on the water.

If you choose to take the helicopter flight, please note the aircraft typically seats 5 to 6 people, depending on weight.

We’d hate to see you go hungry so we’ve got you covered. Every guest booked on tour receives a packed picnic lunch.

Your lunch includes a fresh sandwich (chicken or vegetarian. Vegan, gluten-free and most dietary needs can be accommodated if you let us know when booking), fruit, a roast veggie salad and a selection of snacks to keep you fuelled for the adventure.

Prefer to bring your own? No problem. Just make sure you’re prepared. We’ll make a quick stop at a café in Te Anau on the way but we can’t guarantee the lunch options available, and there’s no food for purchase in Milford Sound or on the boat.

To keep your journey comfortable, we plan multiple stops along the way, including a café visit and regular bathroom breaks. Upon arrival at Milford Sound, restroom facilities are available both at the terminal and on the cruise boat, allowing you to relax and fully enjoy your experience.

We won’t spoil all the surprises! You’ll enjoy a couple of café stops before reaching Fiordland, and along Milford Road, we’ll pause at several stunning viewpoints. The road to Milford Sound is kept in tip-top shape year-round, thanks to diligent maintenance. But Mother Nature likes to keep us on our toes—especially in winter—so you might spot a sprinkle of snow hiding in those shady spots, adding a bit of extra charm to the stunning views.

Of course, safety always comes first. If conditions take a turn for the worse and the road isn’t safe to travel, we’ll cancel the tour. No worries though—we’ll reach out ahead of time and do our best to find you another day to experience the magic of Milford Sound.
